The Builder Who Break Things
By: Hayley Michelle Trachtenberg
He didn’t mean to,
or at least that’s what he tells himself.
He says it was an
accident.
He says he didn’t
have a choice.
He says he couldn’t
have stopped it.
He tells the police
he only worked at the home inn for a week.
He doesn’t tell
them that he hated it.
He tells them he
heard the alarm in the shower.
He doesn’t tell
them that he casually strolled from the top of the stairs into the garden and
awaited the fire department.
He says he didn’t
mean to.
At least that’s
what he tells his father.
He says he can
cover the coasts the insurance won’t.
He says he can
build something new there.
Something better.
He says he could
have built something better a long time ago if only his father only listened.
He says the fire
was an accident.
He says joining the
family business was an accident.
He says accidents
happen and cannot be avoided.
He embraces his
accidents.
He embraces the
broken plot of land.
He sees opportunity.
He sees open fields.
He creates with the
ashes of his father’s dreams.
He builds with the
cinders of his family’s legacy.
He doesn’t cry.
He doesn’t feel
guilt.
He is not sorry for
what happened….
At least that’s
what he tells himself.
